Beginner Tutorial 2: Installing Fonts on a Windows 10 Computer
As I scroll through the many Facebook groups I am a member of, I notice a lot of questions about installing fonts. I thought I would make a quick video explaining the process and sharing one of my favorite websites that provides free fonts and svgs. Creative Fabrica is great because you can download fonts and svgs for free and they even include a commercial license! As always, make sure to read the license to determine what that means for you. Don't assume that a commercial license means you have free reign. Each company has their own version of it. I love that Creative Fabrica is very clear about what you can and can not do with their digital products.
- When you download a font, it will be zipped (compressed). You must unzip the file before you can install the font. Windows 10 machines have the ability to unzip one file at a time. Just right click on the zipped file and choose "Extract all". I download a lot of files at once, so I installed the free program called "7-zip" in order to extract all the folders at once.
- It can be tricky to remember which fonts (or svgs) have a commercial license, which fonts allow you to make physical products with the font, and which fonts allow you to sell SVGs with the fonts you used. Whenever I unzip a font or svg file, I always add the initials of the company and the license it includes. In this video, I downloaded "Wonderful Christmas" from Creative Fabrica. I would rename this file as "Wonderful Christmas CF - CL". It doesn't affect the install and it won't change the name when you see it in Silhouette Studio. When I choose a font I'd like to use commercially, I check out the name I gave it in the folder where I save all my fonts.
- Although script fonts look like they are welded, each letter is actually separate. This doesn't affect a document that will be printed. However, if you want to cut out the font, you need to weld the letters together before sending the document to cut. Otherwise, any letters that overlap, will be cut out as individual letters.
Hope that helps!
I'll see you in the craft room.
